How it works.abdIdeas for use.This is a list of possible uses in the classroom. The resource has been designed to be flexible and interactive. It is mainly for use on interactive whiteboards, though not exclusively. This list is by no means exhaustive, it is just a few ideas.Mini Whiteboards.InvestigateCoordinate ShapesThe Coordinate Shapes workbook is aimed at improving students understanding of Coordinates in the first or all four quadrants and also properties of polygons.Entering coordinatesTo enter the coordinates for each shape, simply enter the x and y coordinates in each table. The points will automatically be plotted. The points need to be put in order in the table and the first point needs to be entered again at the end to complete the shape. Entering the names of the shapesTo enter the names of the shapes, simply type them into the cells underneath the coordinate table. The key underneath the graph will automatically be updated.Show the coordinate grid with one right angled triangle drawn. Ask the students to write down the coordinates of another right angled triangle that will fit on the grid. Try some of them and look at the coordinates to see if there are any patterns. This could be repeated for any shape, when looking at the students answers, look for the more unusual ones, e.g. where the right angle is not just made from vertical and horizontal lines. Also try out answers you know to be wrong on the board for discussion points.Small groupsAllow small groups to work on the computer to draw shapes that have particular properties, e.g. five sides and one right angle, one pair of parallel sides or one line of symmetry.xIn a computer lab, get the students to open up the workbook. Ask them to draw a shape and it's reflection in the line y=x or x=5 for example. Ask them to repeat this for other shapes and try to find relationships between coordinates of corresponding points. This could also be done for the other transformations, (it works well for rotations of 90 or 180 about the origin).Read Me!*
